The Mutterings and ‘Golden Nuggets of Truth on Life and Faith
by cartoonist Jeff Larson; one blog at a time
The year my DOG almost ATE BABY JESUS!
Like the tradition of watching a Charlie Brown Christmas or It’s a Wonderful Life, I like to share the story of when…
my dog almost ate Baby Jesus.
A Divine Appointment with an Angel
This story is near and dear to my heart.
Back in December of 2001, on the icy, snow-covered roads near Hayward, Wisconsin, a young mom with her preschool children in the family car spotted an older man (my dad) with his car's hood up along the side of the road.
Get out of Town!
IMAGINE the buzz around the coffee maker in HEAVEN.. a little over 2000 years ago, when God's plan for 'saving' mankind was revealed?
Thanksgiving’s Dirty Little Secret
We all think of Thanksgiving, pondering God’s blessings of family and friends, but back on the farm, Thanksgiving is that dirty little secret, especially among the poultry.
The Wine, Cheese, & Lutefisk Communion
This falls short of the Holy Sacraments, but it is my celebration of the Green Bay Packers' 23-6 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, November 23, 2025.
For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body --PACKERS or VIKINGS,
The Parable of the Sower (2025 edition) (Revised)
This is my modern-day paraphrase of Matthew 13:3-8,
where Jesus taught lessons from the world in the days of the Gospel. Of course, I have added a cartoons illustrations with a 2025 flair
My Back Pew Update
GOOD NEWS: “I finally updated The Back Pew!
“Hey friends, after 20+ years, I gave the site a fresh coat of paint, and I removed much of the clutter. I have become a bit of a hoarder with my website design (mostly text everywhere… jokes, comments, etc.), but after a ‘website intervention’ by a friend, you will not recognize The NEW Back Pew.
Just a SKOSH
SKOSH.. From the Japanese word "sukoshi," pronounced SKOSH. That also MEANS A LITTLE BIT. e.g. "I'll have a SKOSH of that pie."
SKOSH is an underutilized word, that I don't recall it making it into any Bible Translation. It is implied though, and rest assured, SKOSH will be in my Back Pew paraphrase.

My Intolerant Jesus
YOU INTOLERANT CHRISTIANS
You are un-WOKE, anti-LBGTQ right-winged, anti choice misogynists. You are bible-thumping, gun-toting nut jobs voting blindly Republican every election like lemmings heading off a political cliff.
The only progressive thought in your life is considering a Progressive Insurance policy.
Dr. Jeffrey and Mr. Hide
As I ROLLER COASTER through this amusement park of life past the sideshows of a bearded lady, the two-headed cow, and the tattooed sword swallowing vicar, I realize again.. LIFE IS A RIDE.
My Duct Tape Revival
I am a big fan of Redneck Jokes and Humor, as my upbringing in rural Wisconsin will attest.
Not a Latte, nor a Mocha Grande
I confess I visit the local coffee shops now and then for a Latte, but if my dad were still alive, he would NOT approve.
Shoot out at the Ludzack Corral
About once a year, I like to share my tale from the Old Days (1965?). Mid-West, but just like any Clint Eastwood Western, i.e.... The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, or The Unforgiven. This story of Justice with six-shooters blazing begs to be retold.
Jesus loves ME! Go figure
The Christian Bible is a remarkable collection of God's inspired Word, including His mighty deeds. The BIG BANG, parting the RED SEA, and the Great Flood to name a few
But our GREAT GOD also loves us! He leaves the 99 for the one, He sent his son JESUS to bring us salvation from our sins He is my shepherd and much more.
Just a GLIMPSE
Think of those grey days when it appears the sun will never shine again, but then a spot on the clouds glows and moments later the sun peeks out. I now see the sun and feel its warmth.
This glimpse often describes my pursuit of God.
Well at least I never…
Well, at least I never…
Ever console yourself regarding your behavior, words, judgments, and/or circumstances that make you look bad by qualifying these moments with the following.... “Well, at least I am not like so-and-so."
A Truly Grizzly Tale
Have you ever been chased by a Grizzly Bear? No, well I have.
Back when my kids were young, we went camping and I had a heart-stopping moment when
I spotted a massive grizzly bear—
Dream Big, or Go Home
So let’s Dream Big!
The other day, I had a dream. It was not on the level of Martin Luther King Jr. 's 'I Had a Dream' dream, but it was significant in Jeff's world.
An Inconvenient Truth
In 2007, former VP Al Gore won an Oscar for his documentary, ‘An Inconvenient Truth,’ on global warming.
This is NOT about Global Warming but it is about an even more inconvenient truth.
There is only ONE WAY to Heaven
