If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
Jesus wasn’t handing out self-amputation instructions for wayward seamen. In Matthew 5:28-30, he used strong language to make a stronger point: sin is serious, and we should treat it that way. Better to lose something precious than to lose your soul.
Double Peg Leg Pete heard “gouge it out… cut it off” and went all-in. Eye. Hands. Both legs. Now he’s standing there with an itch he can’t reach and a look that says, “Maybe I overdid it.”
That’s the joke. And that’s the warning.
As extreme as this advice may seem, I do not see our society going all-in double peg-legged Pete regarding sin. We hardly feel sad about sin, and our reaction at times is just as extreme in the other direction—soft-pedaling what Jesus said, explaining away the cost of following Him, or acting like a little lust, a little compromise, a little “it’s not that bad” won’t hurt anybody. Pete took the verse too far. A lot of us don’t take it far enough.
The eye that wanders, the hand that reaches for what isn’t ours, the feet that keep walking toward the same old sin—those are symptoms. The real surgery happens inside.
So laugh at Pete. Then ask the harder question: What would I actually cut out of my life if I took Jesus as seriously as He takes me? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
