Chasing the Wind… or Chasing My Tail?

Cartoon of a dog chasing his tail with the message “Chasing the Wind… or Chasing My Tail?” Ecclesiastes 4:4 Christian cartoon by The Back Pew

Ecclesiastes 4:4

And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind…. or like a dog chasing his tail.

Chasing the Wind? Or Just Chasing My Tail?

My dog Cooper told me the other day (with his eyes), after reflecting on his life so far, that life is futile in its pursuit of dog treats, table scraps, and learning to roll over on command. All this is like Chasing His Tail when compared to the simple pleasure of being with the master he loved, my wife Mary. SMART DOG.

I know Solomon (the wisest and richest man who ever lived) wrote something similar in Ecclesiastes as an old man looking back on his life. His core conclusion is: Life is meaningless (“vanity”) when lived without God at the center.

Life is empty and futile when God is not at the center. True satisfaction is found in fearing God and keeping His commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

“I saw that all toil and achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” Ecclesiastes 4:4

All is temporary and ultimately empty like “chasing the wind”… or my dog chasing his tail.

As I approach 69, I find my wisdom falls somewhere between Solomon and my dog Cooper. With regard to the luxuries of life (and wisdom), I find I probably have more in common with Cooper, but either way, the most important things are to love well, live well, and walk daily in the presence of the Father.
