Moses and the Burning Bush – No S’mores! (Exodus 3)

Christian cartoon of Moses at the burning bush being told to remove his sandals on holy ground while thinking about making S’mores

Exodus 3:1-6

Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”

When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.”

“Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”

Burning Bush Moments… wasted

I have never heard the voice of God from a burning bush like Moses, or heard the voice of Jesus call my name from a blinding light like the Apostle Paul, but I believe God’s Spirit still speaks and leads us.

In big but often small ways, the Holy Spirit impresses on our hearts what to say, and what to do. But if I ignore these prompts and am afraid to move and follow His leading… well, it would be in my cartoon brain like Moses seeing the burning bush and deciding to make S’mores rather than listen to the voice of God.

Ok, maybe not a great one-to-one analogy, but my point is how many times do we hold back in our words and/or actions when we feel God’s leading? We don’t like pain or rejection, and so our testimony is muted.

I am not judging who reads this, as the above analogy fits my life too well. I pray going forward to commit to serving God in any way he leads. I pray the same for you, as I believe the church (all of God’s people) in America as a whole lives a muted testimony, as we too often are afraid of offending our secular world, so we figuratively ‘make s’mores’ with the leading of God’s Spirit. We allow ourselves to be put into a nice, safe box filled with bubble wrap and popcorn to insulate us, rather than testifying to the Gospel message.

Please share your COMMENTS below: What do you, and what does the church (God’s people) do when the Spirit leads? Do we rush the gates of Hell, or make S’mores?

Also… if you’re able, please consider supporting The Back Pew as we fight the culture wars — ONE CLEAN CARTOON AT A TIME. 😊
