Ant Farms and Worker Bees

The ants go marching one by one, hooray! Hooray! And so the marching of the little people is what makes this world work too.

I have not polled any ants or bees, but what I understand is that they are all about teamwork with the mutual goal of supporting the success of their respective Ant Hill or Bee Hive.

They are all about the business, and no complaints about their role back at the respective ant hills and bee hives.

I have never heard of an ant going on strike, then walking around the ant hill with picket signs protesting unfair wages or unsafe working conditions. Their only egocentric dream is being Ant of the month and having their picture hung up in the lunch room.

And back at the HIVE, there is no BUZZ around the coffee maker by Bob the Bee complaining about the Queen Bee.

Now let’s leave the ant hills and bee hives and return to The Rat Race, which coincidentally is not about Rats but about how all us peeps scurry with a more narcissistic approach to life.

In our Rat Race, which is free of rats, ants, or bees, we all have roles, but in a more established hierarchy.

  • There are presidents, kings, superstar athletes, CEOs of major corporations, and then there is ME

  • There are men of great strength, celebrities, super models, great authors, and there is ME.

So, where do you fit into this world? Are you a superstar or a worker bee?  Do you run a major corporation, or are you just part of life's ant farm?   Truth is, I like it here on the farm. Just another (pretty) face in the sea of faces, and you know what they say, all ants look alike.

So how does that fit in with the body of Christ?  Selfless service and simply doing what needs to be done, no matter if you are the next Billy Graham, the next church janitor, or even.. a cartoonist!

  • The human body has many parts, but these parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12

  • so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. Romans 12:5

So ‘Be a bee’ shall be our marching orders. Kind of like the old Army slogan Be all that you can Be, but with an extra ‘e’.

But I digress…

Whether you are the head of a corporation, work in the mail room, or are a server at the local pie shop.

It makes no difference if you are a mom buried with the job of caring for your preschool children, a teacher of 4th graders, or a senior widow slowed by old age.  Be faithful and obedient to God in the moments that make up your day.

  • The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Matthew 23:11

  • “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.  Matthew 22:37-39

  • Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8

  • just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28

These are just a few of many verses that call for us to serve rather than be served. A life not burdened with the status of man but instead living for the Kingdom of God.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story can make all the difference.

God's Bugs? What a high calling!  Maybe the bar should be set a bit higher, lest the classic Hymns for us 'bugs' be

  • The Ants Go Marching One By One, Hooray!, and

  • the Flight of the Bumblebee.

May God find us faithful to His calling on each of our hearts. Pray, Listen, and be obedient to God’s call. This makes God smile and leads us to a path of contentment and success.

Blessings

Jeff ( a bit buggy ) Larson
