Responsive Mumbling

Colossians 3:16

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with grateful hearts.

I grew up in a church where responsive reading was part of Sunday. The pastor read a line. The congregation read the next one, in unison, until somebody said amen.

As a teen, I cringed when it showed up in the bulletin. We nicknamed it responsive mumbling. The speeds did not match. The tones did not match. The cadence was a suggestion.

Still, these are good memories of the small country church where I grew up. One part redneck, one part family. It is where I learned to love the Lord, through the message and the witness of those good folks. Even if the reading was a little cringy.

The form was fine. The mumble was the teen review. The church was the gift.
