Genesis 12:1-4

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you…”

So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran.

In my cartoon world, Abram gets the call in a letter at his modest house in Haran. Just him, Sarai, and a cat named Horace. No kids. Quiet street.

Then the letter comes, and off they go, trusting God to lead.

So much for the Golden Years.

God does not always wait until we feel ready. Sometimes the call lands after we have already unpacked. Abram did not get a retirement brochure. He got a road.

The name change to Abraham comes later. In this chapter, he is still Abram — 75, obedient, and not done.

Note: I am 69, so I figure I have six years before God makes any big call on my life. Then again, I think I am missing the point of how this “calling” thing works. :)
