I was a school bus driver for about six years, and this backpack phenomenon was everywhere. About every third elementary child—especially the boys—seemed to have a backpack unzipped, leaving a trail of homework, crayons, gym shoes, and half a lunch behind them… all while completely oblivious. And yes, some would leave the backpack itself behind.
Jesus used ordinary life to explain the kingdom. School supplies on the sidewalk may not be in the Gospels, but the lesson is the same: there are days we walk around with the backpacks of our lives carelessly unzipped, leaving us ill-prepared for the new day.
