Apologetics vs Apologetic (know the difference)

Christian Cartoon of man not understanding the difference between being apologetic and apologetics

Apologetics…

  • 1 Peter 3:15

“But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.

  • 2 Timothy 2:15
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.”

Apologetics vs Apologetic

  • Apologetic: Showing or expressing regret, remorse, or sorrow for something you have done wrong.

  • Apologetics: The defense or explanation of the Christian faith.

Clearly, both are important.

Just the other morning, the first thing I did was apologize to my wife for being so crabby the day before. It was a no-good, very bad day when my patience was short, and my anger bubbled over into my muttering and actions. I wish I could take it back. The next best thing for me was to make sure to apologize before my morning coffee. My wife is kind and accepted my apology. Without apologizing, my unpleasant heart can carry over to frustrate and hurt my wife.

Now, the term Apologetics I didn’t really understand or hear used until recent years. But the practice of being prepared to give a defense for the faith is something I have learned is important.

My prayer today is that we all, as God’s people, are apologetic when we are wrong, and that our “Apologetics” are clearly demonstrated in our words and our actions, leading others to God’s Truth.

Please share in the COMMENTS below: Have you ever mixed up “Apologetics” and “Apologetic”? Or what’s one time you had to apologize and learned from it?
