I have a sign by my desk: So when is this “old enough to know better” supposed to kick in?
I have a story about 69-year-old me on an aluminum ladder, 13 feet up, chainsaw in hand, cutting a tree that was growing the wrong way. It did not go as planned. I am still here typing, so that tale can wait. I called it Darwin Award DENIED.
Back to Genesis. “Old enough to know better” had not kicked in for Abram either.
Genesis 16:5 is almost funny. Sarai offered the plan. Abram said yes. What could go wrong? Next, Hagar is pregnant, and Sarai says it’s his fault.
Both skipped the promise and wrote a workaround. Both own the wreck. Pointing feels better than repenting. It always has.
God still sees Hagar. God still keeps the later promise. This chapter does not get cleaned up. Faith and a bad idea can live in the same tent.
