The Resounding Silence of God
Max Lucado wrote a great book called When God Whispers Your Name. But what happens when God whispers your name… and you can’t hear Him? Or worse — what if He seems completely silent?
Not so many years ago, I went through back-to-back hurricane-force personal events. My finances, health, and spirit were all shaken. I have never despaired more deeply in my life.
I sobbed and cried out to God for help. I begged Him to ease these trials. But my prayers were met with what felt like resounding silence.
In my desperation, I prayed prayers that sounded a lot like the Psalms:
Why, O Lord, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? Ps 10:1
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. Ps 22:1-2
But during these difficult times, I learned something important: There is a huge difference between God ignoring my prayers and God being silent as an answer.
His silence wasn’t rejection. It was an invitation to sit in the pain, examine my own heart, and grow in ways I never would have if He had answered quickly.
I wasn’t looking for a genie. I needed the God who walks on water.
Like Peter, I had taken my eyes off Jesus and was drowning in the waves. The storms were loud, but God was still present — even in the quiet.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalms 46:10
The good news is I endured these difficult years and learned over time how faithful and loving God was and is.
This is my prayer for you, too.
Be still,
be faithful,
be listening,
be prayerfully
remain peaceful even in the Resounding Silence.
God has not abandoned you.
Blessings, Jeff Larson
