Sleepy Hollow Lutheran was not amused by the ushers’ Halloween theme.
You can see why. A harvest table is one thing. A skeleton with a scythe and the offering plate is another.
1 John 1:5 God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
A church can smile at the season. Kids in costumes, a bowl of candy, a trunk in the parking lot. That is neighborliness. But collecting the church offering dressed as the Grim Reaper is the other direction.
2 Corinthians 9:7 still sits under this. Give what you have decided in your heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion.
I pray your church is filled with cheerful givers with nary a ‘trick or tithe’ giving campaign.
