“Lift up your hands to the sanctuary and bless the Lord.”
I grew up in churches where nobody raised their hands. Hands stayed in pockets, on the pew, or politely at your sides. Worship was sincere. It just wasn’t… airborne.
Then I started attending places where hands went up. First I watched. Then I tried one hand. Felt risky. Felt a little showy. Felt like I might fall.
Eventually I went for both.

Learning to raise both hands is a lot like learning to ride a bike. Training wheels. Then two hands. Then one. Then — if you’re brave or slightly off-balance — no hands at all.
Of course, the point was never the posture. It was the heart of worship
Worship, it doesn’t get a grade on. It doesn’t require you to stay vertical. God sees the heart that is reaching, even when the feet aren’t quite ready.
I’m still more comfortable with one hand some Sundays. Other days both go up. And every so often I remember Carl on the floor and smile. At least I have not fallen… yet.
