My Life Seen Through a Bottle

Proverbs 23:31-35

Do not gaze at wine when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. You see strange sights and imagine confusing things. You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging. “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt! They beat me, but I don’t feel it!” When will I wake up so I can have another drink?

This cartoon illustrating Proverbs 23:31-35 described my life far too well. By God’s grace, I’ve been sober for 11 years now. Life is so much clearer — and better — on this side of freedom.

Eleven years ago, when I finally quit drinking altogether, I began the process of replacing those times I turned to alcohol with something better. It wasn’t easy at first, but prayerfully I rediscovered how to face real emotions instead of masking them with drink.

I’m not proud of those years, but it is my story. My wonderful wife, my family, and most of all the amazing love and grace of God the Father walked with me through it. I wish I could take back those compromised years, but as I often say now, “No one wants to have a redemption story… unless they need one.” I needed one — and this is my redemption story.

If you or someone you love is struggling with alcohol, there is real hope. God can break the chain and give you a new beginning.
