Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
He took the verse at the desk. Pencil down. A few cartoons on the wall. The mug says God’s Truth. The cup of pencils says Clean Humor. That is the job, and it is also the prayer. Not a performance. A way of coming close.
James does not say God will come near if the drawing is clever. He says come near, and God comes near. The washing and the single heart are in the same verse. The cartoons on the wall are the evidence of the sitting, not the reason he is received.
Some days the pencil is the nearness. Some days it is the excuse to stay at the desk and never look up. The verse knows the difference.
