Spring Cleaning My Spirit 2026
No so many years ago, my wife and I sold our 2-story home of 14 years and downsized to a cozy 3-bedroom rambler. Then, as we’ve aged, we moved again into a 2-bedroom townhome.
Our “Final Resting Place,” we affectionately call it.
But here’s the truth: We still have too much stuff.
After multiple moves, many trips to Goodwill, and overloading the garbage service, we’re still drowning in clutter. Our state of “clutter-dome” hasn’t improved nearly as much as we hoped.
The same thing happens in our spiritual lives.
Just like physical clutter, spiritual clutter quietly fills our hearts and minds — old habits, worries, distractions, resentment, too much screen time, and things that pull us away from God.
Jesus made it simple. When asked for the greatest commandment, He replied:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind… and love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:36-40
If something in our life doesn’t help us love God more fully or love others better — it’s probably clutter.
Philippians 4:8 gives us an excellent filter:
“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
This year, I’m asking God to help me declutter my spirit.
I want less of what weighs me down and more of what draws me closer to Him.
