APRIL FOOL’S DAY during Holy Week?

CHRISTIANITY DOES NOT

have a definitive stance on April Fools' Day, …and the day isn't directly addressed in scripture,

BUT lucky for you… April Fools is addressed with scripture here in THE BACK PEW

APRIL FOOLS is rooted in secular traditions possibly tied to medieval festivals or calendar changes, and is generally seen as harmless fun if we embrace it as lighthearted banter.

BUT… The Bible does have much to say about fools just not giving attention to April 1st as a special day.

Instead, the Bible offers the book of Proverbs, written by the Wise King Solomon. In Proverbs, Solomon often contrasts foolishness with wisdom, particularly in the context of moral and spiritual behavior.

Here’s a concise overview based on key passages:

PROVERBS frequently describes fools as those who reject wisdom, understanding, and godliness. For example:

  • Proverbs 1:7 states, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction," suggesting fools ignore divine guidance.

  • Proverbs 10:14 says, "The mouth of a fool brings ruin near," linking foolishness to reckless speech.

  • Proverbs 18:2 notes, "A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion," highlighting self-centeredness.

THE PSALMS often connect foolishness to denying God. Psalm 14:1 famously declares, "The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God,’" equating atheism or practical godlessness with folly.

ECCLESIASTES (e.g., 10:12-14)

portrays fools as those who multiply words without meaning, contrasting them with the wise who act thoughtfully.

  • In the New Testament, Jesus and Paul use "fool" to critique hypocrisy or spiritual blindness:

    • JESUS in Matthew 7:26
compares a fool to someone who hears His words but doesn’t act on them, like building a house on sand.

    • PAUL in 1 Corinthians 1:18-25
contrasts worldly "foolishness" with God’s wisdom, noting the cross seems foolish to those who don’t believe.

With all this talk about foolishness,

It is important to clarify what a fool is and what he is not.

A FOOL ISN’T… just someone lacking intelligence

A FOOL IS… often a person who disregards God’s truth, acts recklessly, or prioritizes self over righteousness. CONTEXT MATTERS!

FOOLISHNESS in Scripture is concerned with moral failing rather than any harmless April Fool’s Day prank.

It is a bit of irony that in 2026, April Fool’s Day issandwiched right in the middle of Holy Week.

In some ways, this is fitting as mankind’s collective moral failings are a ‘Fool’s Folly’.

We see this folly at work in our culture today, where biblical views on sexuality are labeled as harmful or ‘detrimental,’ while celebrations of what Scripture calls unrighteousness (such as Pride Month) are promoted openly. Just this week, NBA player Jaden Ivey was waived (fired) by the Chicago Bulls shortly after publicly refusing to support Pride Night because of his faith in Christ.”

The fool often rages against correction and loves to express his own opinion without knowledge (Prov 18:2).

Yet standing on God’s wisdom has always carried a cost in a world that calls evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20).”

This is one of many battles raging now, but again, this foolishness is sandwiched in, but is not greater than the entirety of the Holy Week. MAN’S FOLLY is just a blip in importance when compared to God’s Salvation Story.

Thank you, Jesus, for bringing focus and hope through your life, death, and resurrection.

April Fool’s Day Blessings
