Deer Pants for Water… Psalm 42

Psalm 42:1

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.

Deer Pants?

In my cartoon world, this young buck has his own idea of “deer pants” — something to keep his little hoofies dry while trekking through lakes, bogs, and streams.

But the psalmist wrote about a different kind of panting. “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God” (Psalm 42:1). The deer longs for water that gives life. In the same way, the psalmist’s soul longs for God.

I read this the other day, and it was a gut check. Does my soul truly pant for Him? Most days I’m faithful to pray, read my Bible, and want to obey God… but does my soul pant for Him? The pace and noise of this world so easily distract me. I have to confess that while my soul needs to be close to God, I don’t always seek Him the way I should.

So today, Psalm 42:1 reminds me to hunger for His ways, His leading, and His perfect love—the kind that blankets the soul and fills us with His Spirit.
