Dear Crabby - Serving in the Church

Christian Cartoon featuring online Christian counseling regarding serving in the church

Galatians 6:9

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

Serving in the Church

Serving in the church is genuinely important — it’s one of the main ways we live out our faith and love for others. Every believer has been given gifts by the Holy Spirit specifically to serve the Body of Christ and glorify God (1 Peter 4:10-11). When we serve willingly, we follow Jesus’ own example: “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Matthew 20:28). Healthy churches thrive when people cheerfully use their time, talents, and resources (2 Corinthians 9:7, Colossians 3:23).

However… (insert smirk here) The time-honored tradition of using guilt and shame as the #1 recruiting tool has been remarkably effective since… Acts 2!

The Better Way: God wants cheerful men and women with a servant’s heart (Galatians 5:13)… with healthy boundaries. It’s okay to say “no” to even good things, but also we can say a wholehearted “yes” to the right things. Wisdom and rest are also part of stewardship.
